Drug
Testing Definitions
Urine
Testing - detects drugs and their metabolites in the
presence of human urine, providing test results in five
(5) minutes. Most drug metabolites can be detected for
48-72 hours after ingestion.
Adulterant
Testing - detects masking agents ingested or foreign
substances added to a urine specimen with the intent
of concealing drug metabolite detection in one (1) minute.
Saliva
Testing - detects drugs and their metabolites in the
presence of human saliva, providing test results in
ten (10) minutes. Most drug metabolites can be detected
for up to 24 hours after ingestion.

Additional
Materials Required
- A
watch, clock or timer to determine the five (5) minute
testing period.
Storage
and Stability
- Store
tests at room temperature, do not freeze. If tests are
stored below room temperature, allow your test to reach
room temperature prior to use.
- Tests
have an expiration date (Month and Year) clearly printed
on the foil pouch. The test is valid up to and including
the last day of the month printed on the foil pouch.
Do not use a test beyond the expiration date.
Specimen
Collection
- Fresh
urine specimen may be collected directly into the test
cup. Specimen may be transferred into a test cup from
a clean, dry collection device if desired.
- Your
test has a temperature strip on the opposite side of
the individual test strips. Immediately upon collecting
a specimen, verify that the temperature is above 90
F. Specimen temperature below 90 F should be considered
adulterated (altered with one or more substances in
an attempt to mask drug detection).
- If
a specimen is adulterated, obtain a fresh specimen from
the individual and re-test.
Test
Procedure
- Remove
the test from its foil pouch only when you are prepared
to conduct a test. The amount of urine specimen collected
must exceed the "MIN Urine Level" indicator
on the side of the test.
- Once
fresh urine specimen is collected, replace the top and
begin to time the test. Verify that the temperature
indicator exceeds 90 F. (see adulterated, above)
- At
the five-minute mark, remove the paper security tab
on the front of the test to read results. Interpretation
of results after five minutes may be inaccurate.
Test
Result Interpretation
- Remember
that "any line or portion of a line is still a
line" when interpreting test results.
- No
conclusions about test results can be made regarding
color intensity or line width. It is very common to
have different shades and widths of lines within the
same test.
- Two
lines above an individual test strip = Negative test
result for that drug or metabolite.
- One
line above an individual test strip = Positive test
result for that drug or metabolite.
- If
no lines are visible, your test is invalid. Transfer
the existing specimen into another test and begin the
testing process again. Return the invalid test to AMS
for QA analysis.
Limitations
of the Test
- QuikScreen
rapid tests are valid for detecting drugs of abuse and
their metabolites in human urine. Positive specimens
can be transported to a laboratory within the QuikScreen
test cup for confirmation testing.
- Your
test is a qualitative (Positive or Negative result)
screening device and is not suggested for determining
the actual amount of drugs or metabolites contained
within a urine specimen.
False
Positive Test Results
- Certain
over-the-counter and prescription medications may cause
false positive test results. Obtain a list of all prescription
and non-prescription medications ingested within the
previous 30 days from every individual providing a urine
specimen.
- Discuss
specifics with a health care professional or seek information
from the manufacturer of the medication in question.

- At
the one-minute mark, compare the colors for pH, Creatinine,
Gluteraldehyde and NPB from the Adulterant Color Chart
included with your tests to the QuikScreen Adulterant
Test Panel colors. Normal values are clearly indicated
on the Adulterant Color Chart.
- After
interpreting adulterant test results, continue to keep
track of the time and interpret the drug portion of
tests at the five-minute mark, as directed in QuikScreen
"Tips for Testing" and Instructions.

Additional
Materials Required
- A

testing period.

- Tests
have an expiration date (Month and Year) clearly printed
on the foil pouch. The test is valid up to and including
the last day of the month printed on the foil pouch.
Do not use a test beyond the expiration date.
Specimen
Collection
- Ensure
that the individual submitting a saliva specimen has
not had anything to eat or drink for at least five (5)
minutes prior to providing a specimen.
- Open
the clear plastic pouch, which is pre-slit for easy
access, and remove the saliva collection swab. Place
the collection swab foam into the mouth, between the
cheek and gums to saturate the foam. Saliva specimen
collection should take less than two minutes.
Test
Procedure
- Remove
the SalivaScreen test from its foil pouch and place
on a flat surface.
- Remove
the saliva collection swab from the mouth of a candidate
and place foam side first into the extraction tube.
- Press
on the top of the collection swab to compress the foam
and extract five (5) drops of saliva into the test well.
Note the time and read test results at the ten (10)
minute mark.
Test
Result Interpretation
- Remember
that "any line or portion of a line is still a
line" when interpreting test results.
- No
conclusions about test results can be made regarding
color intensity or line width. It is very common to
have different shades and widths of lines within the
same test.
- The
Control ("C") line must be present for the
test to be valid. If there is no Control Line present,
you must conduct another test. Return the invalid test
to AMS for QA analysis.
- A
line within the test zone for a specific drug = Negative
test result for that drug.
- No
line within the test zone for a specific drug = Positive
test result for that drug.
Limitations
of the Test
- SalivaScreen
rapid tests are valid for detecting drugs of abuse and
their metabolites in human saliva.
- SalivaScreen
tests are for forensic use only. Positive test results
should be confirmed by additional testing methods.
False
Positive Test Results
- Certain
over-the-counter and prescription medications may cause
false positive test results. Obtain a list of all prescription
and non-prescription medications ingested within the
previous 30 days from every individual providing a saliva
specimen.
